CHENNAI: A writ petition filed in the Madras high court seeks to restrain the state government and the Centre from going ahead with the nuclear thermal power plant at Kudankulam until necessary facilities and infrastructure are provided to the villagers.
In his public interest writ plea, advocate K S Radhakrishnan of Palavakkam said the authorities should be able to evacuate people living within a radius of 170km of the plant in the event of an accident.
Seeking medical and rehabilitation facilities, the plea said developmental activities should not be undertaken at the cost of people's lives. After the Chernobyl nuclear accident in Russia, many countries had begun closing down such units either on their own or due to opposition from the people, Radhakrishnan said.
The recent accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan had caused havoc due to uranium leakage, the plea said, adding that there were possibilities of an earthquake or a tsunami at places close to the Kudankulam power plant.
The project has been facing protests from villagers which began with 127 people observing an indefinite fast. Their efforts gathered momentum as over 15,000 people joined the fight against the plant.
They broke off the fast after an assurance from chief minister J Jayalalithaa that the state government would pass a resolution against the project and take up the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
