Stressing the importance of registering marriages, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court M.Y. Eqbal said it was a must for couples to receive benefits from the government.
Addressing the gathering at the marriage certificate distribution ceremony arranged by the Union Territory of Puducherry Legal Services Authority at the UTPLSA premises on Monday, Mr. Eqbal said apart from government benefits, couples who registered their marriage also had social advantages, since their marriages were legally valid and so the UTPLSA was performing a great service to society, he said.
Around 200 couples received their marriage certificates through the UTPLSA. Through this service, couples of any age can apply to UTPLSA, who will approach the district registrar on behalf of the couple and fix the date for the registration, according to a member of the UTPLSA. Principal District and Sessions Judge T. Ramaswamy and District Judge and Member Secretary of UTPLSA D. Ramabathiran were present at the event.
