|For accepting bribe from a contractor|
New Delhi: A court here has sentenced a Sub-Divisional Engineer (SDE) to three years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) for demanding and accepting a bribe from a Government contractor.
Special Judge Vinod Goel held SDE Ram Ujjagar (50), working in the Karol Bagh exchange of the BSNL, guilty of demanding and accepting the bribe amount of Rs.5,000 from the complainant, Vimal Kumar, for passing the second and final bill of Rs.68,820, which was pending with the convict.
The court also slapped a fine of Rs.25,000 on Ujjagar, apart from the RI of three years.
“The corruption has become a norm of life of some of the corrupt public servants and the courts have been holding that corruption is rampant in the public offices and as such while awarding sentence, no leniency should be shown to the convicted persons,” the Judge said in its order.
According to the prosecution, the complainant, Mr. Kumar, the proprietor of M/s V K Engineers undertook cable laying work for BSNL in Karol Bagh telephone exchange at a total expenditure of Rs.2,24,118. Out of this total amount, Rs.68,820, was pending with the accused Ujjagar and to clear the amount he had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs.5,000.
The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) sleuths of the CBI had on July 23, 2001, caught Ujjagar red-handed, while allegedly accepting the bribe of Rs.5,000 from Mr. Kumar.
The Prosecution produced 11 witnesses to prove its case against the convict, Ujjagar, a resident of Lajpat Nagar. The court had on January 15, 2003, framed charges against him.- PTI
