PUDUCHERRY: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has recently directed a mobile phone showroom in Puducherry to pay compensation of Rs. 14,650 to a consumer for “deficiency in service and indulging in unfair trade practice.”
The Forum has given the direction on a complaint filed by V. Gopinath of Velmurugan Nagar that the firm refused to exchange the defective handset, which he had purchased from the showroom.
In his complaint, he had stated that the mobile handset developed “defects” a month after it was purchased.
The authorised service dealer in Puducherry refused to attend the defect because the “set was not a branded one and it had no national warranty,” the complainant had said.
He further stated that the mobile firm owner refused to exchange the handset and instead offered a sum of Rs 6,000 for the “defective” set which was bought for a sum of Rs 9,650.
After going through the merits of the case, the Forum in its order on September 24 directed the mobile showroom to pay Rs. 9,650 towards cost of the set, Rs. 3,000 as compensation for the “loss and injury suffered by him due to the deficiency in service” and another Rs. 2,000 towards the cost of proceedings. The Forum also directed the firm to discontinue the unfair trade practice.
The complainant was directed to return the handset to the firm.
